Evansville is the commercial, medical, and cultural hub of Southwestern Indiana and the Illinois-Indiana-Kentucky tri-state area in the United States. It is the third-largest city in the state of Indiana and the largest city in Southern Indiana. The city had a total population of 117,429 and a metropolitan population of 358,676 based on the 2010 census.
Situated on an oxbow in the Ohio River, the city is often referred to as the “Crescent Valley” or “River City”. Early French explorers named it La Belle Riviere (“The Beautiful River”). The area has been inhabited by various cultures for millennia, dating back at least 10,000 years.
Evansville’s violent crime, on a scale from 1 (low crime) to 100, is 57 while the US average is 41.4. Violent crime is composed of four offenses: murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Its property crime, on a scale from 1 (low) to 100, is 61; the US average is 43.5. Property crime includes the offenses of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The object of the theft-type offenses is the taking of money or property, but there is no force or threat of force against the victims.
